Reflect today on your calling in life

When Jesus looked up, he saw some rich people putting their offerings into the treasury and he noticed a poor widow putting two small coins. Said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the rest; for those others they all made offerings from their excess wealth, but she, from her poverty, offered all her sustenance “. Luke 21: 1-4

Did he really give more than all the rest? According to Jesus, he did! So how can this be? This Gospel passage reveals to us how God sees our giving respect to the worldly vision.

What does it mean to give and generosity? Is it about how much money we have? Or is it something deeper, something more internal? It certainly is the latter.

Giving, in this case, is in reference to money. But this is simply an illustration of all the forms of donation we are called to offer. For example, we are also called to give our time and talents to God for the love of others, the edification of the Church and the spread of the Gospel.

Look at giving from this perspective. Consider donating some of the great saints who have lived hidden lives. Saint Therese of Lisieux, for example, gave her life to Christ in countless small ways. He lived within the walls of his convent and had little interaction with the world. Therefore, from a worldly perspective, he gave very little and made little difference. However, today she is considered one of the greatest doctors of the Church thanks to the small gift of her spiritual autobiography and the testimony of her life.

The same can be said of you. Perhaps you are one who is engaged in what appear to be small and insignificant daily activities. Maybe cooking, cleaning, taking care of the family and the like occupy the day. Or maybe your work takes up most of what you do every day and you find that you have little time left for the "great" things offered to Christ. The question is really this: How does God see your daily service?

Reflect today on your calling in life. Maybe you are not called to go ahead and do "great things" from a public and worldly perspective. Or maybe you don't even do "great things" visible within the Church. But what God sees are the daily acts of love that you do in the smallest of ways. Embracing your daily duty, loving your family, offering daily prayers, etc., are treasures that you can offer to God every day. He sees them and, more importantly, he sees the love and devotion with which you do them. So don't give in to a false and worldly notion of greatness. Do small things with great love and you will give abundance to God in the service of His holy will.

Lord, today and every day I give myself to You and to Your service. May I do all that I am called to do with great love. Please continue to show me my daily duty and help me accept that duty in accordance with Your holy will. Jesus I believe in you.
