Reflect today on the clear, unmistakable, transforming and life-giving words and presence of the Savior of the world

Jesus said to the crowds: “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in the markets and shout at each other: "We played the flute for you, but you didn't dance, we sang a dirge but you didn't cry". Matthew 11: 16-17

What does Jesus mean when he says "We played the flute for you ..." and "we sang a funeral song ...?" The Church Fathers clearly identify this "flute" and "song lament" as the word of God that was preached by the prophets of antiquity. Many came before Jesus to prepare the way, but many did not listen. John the Baptist was the last and greatest prophet, and he called people to repentance, but few listened. Hence, Jesus emphasizes this sad truth.

In our day, we have much more than the Old Testament prophets. We have the incredible testimony of the saints, the infallible teaching of the Church, the gift of the sacraments, and the life and teaching of the Son of God himself, as recorded in the New Testament. Yet sadly, so many refuse to listen. Many are unable to "dance" and "cry" in response to the Gospel.

We must "dance" in the sense that the gift of Christ Jesus, through His life, death, and resurrection, should be the cause of our eternal joy and worship. Those who truly know and love the Son of God are filled with joy! Furthermore, we must "cry" because of the countless sins in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Sin is real and prevalent, and holy pain is the only appropriate response. Salvation is real. Hell is real. And both of these truths require a total response from us.

In your life, to what extent have you allowed the gospel to influence you? How attentive are you to the voice of God as it was spoken in the lives of the saints and through our Church? Are you in tune with God's voice as he speaks to you deep in your conscience in prayer? Are you listening? Answering? Following? And give your whole life to the service of Christ and his mission?

Reflect today on the clear, unmistakable, transforming and life-giving words and presence of the Savior of the world. Reflect on how attentive you have been in your life to everything He has said clearly and to His very presence. If you don't find yourself “dancing” for the glory of God and “crying” for the obvious sins of your life and in our world, then commit yourself again to a radical following of Christ. Ultimately, the Truth that God has spoken down the ages and His holy and divine presence are all that matter.

My glorious Lord Jesus, I recognize your divine presence in my life and in the world around me. Help me be more attentive to the countless ways you talk to me and come to me every day. When I discover you and your holy word, fill me with joy. When I see my sin and the sins of the world, give me true pain so that I can work tirelessly to fight my own sin and bring Your love and mercy to those who need it most. Jesus I believe in you.
