Reflect today on the many good things happening around you

Then John said in response: "Master, we have seen someone cast out demons in your name and we have tried to prevent it because he does not follow in our company." Jesus said to him: "Do not prevent it, because everyone who is not against you is for you." Luke 9: 49-50

Why would the apostles try to stop someone from casting out a demon in Jesus name? Jesus did not care and, in fact, tells them not to prevent him. So why were the Apostles worried? Most likely due to jealousy.

The jealousy we see in this case among the Apostles is one that can sometimes creep into the Church. It has to do with a desire for power and control. The Apostles were upset that the person who cast out demons did not follow in their company. In other words, the Apostles could not be responsible for this person.

While this may be difficult to understand, it can be useful to see it in a modern context. Suppose someone is in charge of a church ministry and another person or other people start a new ministry. The new ministry is quite successful, and as a result, those who have worked in the older and more established ministries may get angry and a little jealous.

This is silly but it is also the reality. It happens all the time, not only within a church but also in our daily life. When we see someone else doing something that is successful or that bears fruit, we can become envious or jealous.

In this case, with the Apostles, Jesus is quite understanding and compassionate for the whole thing. But it is also quite clear. "Do not prevent it, because anyone who is not against you is for you". Do you see things in life this way? When someone does well do you rejoice or are you negative? When another does good things in Jesus name, does this fill your heart with gratitude that God is using that person for good or do you become envious?

Reflect today on the many good things happening around you. Particularly reflect on those who promote God's Kingdom. And reflect on how you feel about them. Please see them as your colleagues in Christ's vineyard rather than your competitors.

Lord, I thank you for the many good things that happen in your Church and in society. Help me enjoy everything you do through others. Help me let go of any struggle I have with envy. Jesus I believe in you.
