Reproaches of our conscience: a punishment of Purgatory

Penalty of meaning. Even though earthly fire alone was the tormentor of souls, what pain would this element, the most active of all, not cause! But if it is fire of another nature, created on purpose by God and made to torment the whole soul: if, in comparison with it, our fire is only as painted (S. Ans.); I know it is the same as that of Hell: what immense pain it must cause! And I'll have to try it! And maybe for years and years for my sloth!

Penalty for damage. The soul, created for God, tends to him like a child at the mother's breast, like any grave in the center of the earth. Released from the body, from earthly loves, the soul, by itself, rushes into God, to love him, to rest in him. But, unworthy, because it is stained, God rejects it; and still unfulfilled love, the need for God and not being able to reach possession of Him, is an indescribable pain, the true torment of Purgatory. You will understand it one day, but with what regret!

Reproaches of the conscience. The thought that it is their fault that they suffer so much will not be small pain; they had been warned; they knew that, for any slightest sin, there was a corresponding torment in Purgatory; yet, foolish, they committed so many; they knew the value of penance, good works, indulgences; and they didn't care ... Now, they complain— And you don't help them? and you repeat their faults?

PRACTICE. - He recites a De profundis and makes a mortification for the Soul which will come out of Purgatory the first time.
