Saint of the day for February 18: The story of Blessed Giovanni da Fiesole

The patron saint of Christian artists was born around 1400 in a village overlooking Florence. He started painting as a boy and studied under the watchful eye of a local painting master. He joined the Dominicans at the age of about 20, taking the name of Fra Giovanni. He eventually became known as Beato Angelico, perhaps a tribute to his angelic qualities or perhaps the devotional tone of his works. He continued to study painting and perfect his techniques, which included broad brushstrokes, bright colors, and generous, lifelike figures. Michelangelo once said of Beato Angelico: "It must be believed that this good monk visited heaven and was allowed to choose his models there". Whatever his topic, Beato Angelico sought to generate feelings of religious devotion in response to his paintings. Among his most famous works are the Annunciation and the Descent from the Cross and the frescoes in the monastery of San Marco in Florence. He also held leadership positions within the Dominican Order. At one point, Pope Eugene approached him to serve as archbishop of Florence. Beato Angelico refused, preferring a simpler life. He died in 1455.

Reflection: The work of the artists adds a wonderful dimension to life. Without art our lives would be very exhausted. We pray for artists today, especially for those who can raise our hearts and minds to God. Blessed Giovanni da Fiesole is the Patron Saint of Christian Artists
