This huge Crucifix is only seen when the lake freezes

Il Crucifix of Petoskey rests on the bottom of the lake michigan negli United States of America. The piece is 3,35 meters long, weighs 839 kilos and was made of white marble in Italy. It arrived in the US in 1956 after being commissioned by a rural Rapson family. Gerald Schipinski, son of the owners of the farm, died at the age of 15 after suffering a domestic accident and the family bought the Crucifix as a tribute.

During transport, the Crucifix suffered some damage and was rejected by the family. It was then kept in the parish of San Giuseppe for a year until it was bought by a diving club. The group decided to place the crucifix 8 meters deep and more than 200 meters from the shore of Lake Michigan, one of the five great lakes in the United States, to pay tribute to those who have drowned there.

In winter, when temperatures drop below freezing, you can cross the frozen lake and see the Crucifix in the background. Between 2016 and 2018, the ice was not solid enough for people to travel to the site to see the Crucifix. In 2019, however, the processions resumed. In 2015, more than 2.000 people lined up to see the show.
