What does the Catholic Church say about life after death?

Christian beliefs about life after death are based on resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that death is the resurrection of Jesus are part of God's divine plan for humanity. By his death on the cross, Jesus pays the penalty for humanity's sins and humanity's relationship with God is restored. This is called atonement. Christians believe that three days after the crucifixion, God raised Jesus from the dead and appeared once again to his disciples. This means that Jesus' sacrifice was a victory over sin and death. Although physical death still occurs, those who believe in Christ and live a good life will receive eternal life in Heaven.

La Catholic church teaches that humanity will face two judgments:

Individual, final and individual judgment
Individual judgment, sometimes called particular judgment, occurs at the time of death, when each individual will be judged on how they lived their life. The soul will then go in Heaven, Hell or Purgatory depending on whether their actions were judged to conform to God's teachings or not.

Final judgement
The final judgment will come at the end of time, when all humanity will be raised from the dead and the body and soul will be reunited. Here everyone will be judged by Christ who will have returned in all his glory. The teaching on judgment is reflected in the Gospels in the parable of the sheep and the goats.
