Born in Modena from a family deeply linked to Catholicism and Catholic Action, he was a member of FUCI. At the age of 18 he joined the Catholic partisans of the Italy Brigade of Ermanno Gorrieri, with the nickname "Alberto", and soon became deputy commander of the square in Modena and commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Bgt Italy.

Graduated in law, he joined the San Paolo Society and was ordained a priest in 1954. He published many articles in the Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana.

Passionate about Mariology, he took over the management of the monthly magazine Madre di Dio. He is a member of the Pontifical International Marian Academy.

Since 1986 he has been an exorcist in the Diocese of Rome, by mandate of the cardinal vicar Ugo Poletti. He trained at the school of Father Candido Amantini, who for many years had been the most authoritative exorcist of the Scala Santa in Rome. He collaborates with several Italian doctors and psychiatrists.

The Communist newspaper Liberazione reports that Don Amorth would have carried out about 70.000 exorcisms from 1986 to 2007. The same father Amorth in an interview with the British newspaper Sunday Telegraph in 2000 reports of over 50.000 operations carried out. In the same interview Amorth says that many of them took only a few minutes, others several hours. On the basis of these data, considering the interval between 6 June 1986, the date mentioned by the religious, and 29 October 2000, the day of the interview, an average of over 9,5 interventions per day can be calculated.

In 1990 he founded the International Association of Exorcists, of which he was president until 2000. He is currently honorary president.
