Gospel of August 7, 2018

Tuesday of the XVIII week of Ordinary Time

Book of Jeremiah 30,1-2.12-15.18-22.
Word that was addressed to Jeremiah by the Lord:
The Lord God of Israel says: "Write in a book all the things I will tell you,
Thus says the Lord: “Your wound is incurable. your plague is very serious.
For your wound, there are no remedies, no scar is formed.
All your lovers have forgotten you, they are no longer looking for you; for I have struck you as an enemy strikes, with severe punishment, for your great iniquities, for your many sins.
Why are you crying for your wound? Incurable is your plague. Because of your great iniquity, of your many sins, I have done you these evils.
thus says the Lord: “Behold I will restore the fate of Jacob's tents and have compassion on his dwellings. The city will be rebuilt on the ruins and the palace will rise again in its place.
Hymns of praise will emerge, voices of people cheering. I will multiply them and they will not decrease, I will honor them and they will not be despised,
their children will be as they once were, their assembly will be stable before me; while I will punish all their opponents.
Their leader will be one of them and their commander will come out of them; I will bring him closer and he will draw close to me. For who is he who risks his life to come near me? Oracle of the Lord.
You will be my people and I will be your God.

Salmi 102(101),16-18.19-21.29.22-23.
Peoples will fear the name of the Lord
and all the kings of the earth your glory,
when the Lord rebuilds Zion
and it will have appeared in all its splendor.
He turns to the prayer of the poor
and does not despise his plea.

This is written for the future generation
and a new people will give praise to the Lord.
The Lord looked out from the top of his sanctuary,
from heaven he looked at the earth,
to hear the prisoner's moan,
to free the condemned to death.

The children of your servants will have a home,
their descendants will stand firm before you.
So that the name of the Lord may be proclaimed in Zion
and his praise in Jerusalem,
when the peoples gather together
and the kingdoms to serve the Lord.

From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 14,22-36.

[After the crowd had eaten], immediately Jesus forced the disciples to get on the boat and to precede him on the other bank, while he would have dismissed the crowd.
After leaving the crowd, he went up to the mountain, alone, to pray. When evening came, he was still alone up there.
Meanwhile, the boat was already a few miles from the ground and was shaken by the waves, due to the contrary wind.
Towards the end of the night he came towards them walking on the sea.
The disciples, when they saw him walking on the sea, were troubled and said: "He is a ghost" and they began to cry out in fear.
But immediately Jesus spoke to them: «Courage, it is I, do not be afraid».
Peter said to him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."
And he said, "Come!" Peter, getting off the boat, started walking on the water and went to Jesus.
But because of the violence of the wind, he became frightened and, beginning to sink, he shouted: "Lord, save me!".
And immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, grabbed him and said to him, "Man of little faith, why have you doubted?"
As soon as we got on the boat, the wind stopped.
Those who were on the boat bowed down to him, exclaiming: "You really are the Son of God!"
After completing the crossing, they landed in Genèsaret.
And the locals, recognized Jesus, spread the news throughout the region; all the sick brought him,
and they begged him to be able to touch at least the hem of his cloak. And those who touched him healed.
