Today's Gospel 13 September 2020 with the words of Pope Francis

READING OF THE DAY
First reading

From the book of Sirach
Sir 27, 33 - 28, 9 (NV) [Gr. 27, 30 - 28, 7]

Grudge and anger are horrible things,
and the sinner carries them inside.

Whoever takes revenge will suffer the vengeance of the Lord,
who always keeps his sins in mind.
Forgive the offense to your neighbor
and by your prayer your sins will be forgiven.
A man who is angry with another man,
how can he ask the Lord for healing?
He who has no mercy for his fellow man,
how can he plead for his sins?
If he, who is only flesh, holds a grudge,
how can he get God's forgiveness?
Who will atone for his sins?
Remember the end and stop hating,
of dissolution and death and remain faithful
to the commandments.
Remember the precepts and do not hate your neighbor,
the covenant of the Most High and forget the mistakes of others.

Second reading

From the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Romans
Rom 14,7-9

Brothers, none of us lives for himself and none dies for himself, because if we live, we live for the Lord, if we die, we die for the Lord. Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.
For this reason Christ died and returned to life: to be the Lord of the dead and the living.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 18,21-35

At that time, Peter came up to Jesus and said to him: «Lord, if my brother commits sins against me, how many times must I forgive him? Up to seven times? ». And Jesus answered him: «I don't tell you up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
For this reason, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
He had begun to settle the accounts when he was introduced to a man who owed him ten thousand talents. Since he was unable to repay, the master ordered that he be sold with his wife, children and all he possessed, and so paid the debt. Then the servant, prostrate on the ground, begged him saying: "Have patience with me and I will give you everything back". The master took pity on that servant, let him go and forgave him the debt.
As soon as he left, the servant found one of his companions, who owed him a hundred denarii. She grabbed him by the neck and choked him, saying, "Give back what you owe!" His companion, prostrate on the ground, prayed to him saying: "Have patience with me and I will give you back". But he did not want to, went and had him thrown in jail, until he had paid the debt.
Seeing what was happening, his companions were very sorry and went to report to their master everything that had happened. Then the master summoned the man and said to him, “Wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Weren't you also supposed to have pity on your companion, just as I had pity on you? ”. In anger, the master handed him over to the torturers, until he had repaid all the due. So also my heavenly Father will do with you if you do not forgive from your heart, each one to his own brother.

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
Since our Baptism, God has forgiven us, forgiving us an insolvent debt: original sin. But, that's the first time. Then, with limitless mercy, He forgives us all sins as soon as we show even a small sign of repentance. God is like this: merciful. When we are tempted to close our hearts to those who have offended us and apologize, let us remember the words of the heavenly Father to the merciless servant: «I have forgiven you all that debt because you have begged me. Weren't you supposed to have pity on your companion, just as I had pity on you? " (vv. 32-33). Anyone who has experienced the joy, peace, and inner freedom that comes from being forgiven can open up to the possibility of forgiving in turn. (Angelus, September 17, 2017
