For the sake of Jacob my servant and of Israel my chosen one I have called you by name, I have given you a title, although you do not know me. I am the Lord and there is no other, apart from me there is no god; I will make you ready for action, even if you do not know me, so that they may know from the East and the West that there is nothing outside of me.

We always give thanks to God for all of you, remembering you in our prayers and keeping in mind the industriousness of your faith, the fatigue of your charity and the firmness of your hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father.
We know well, brothers loved by God, that you have been chosen by him. Indeed, our Gospel did not spread among you only through the word, but also with the power of the Holy Spirit and with profound conviction.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 22,15-21

At that time, the Pharisees left and held council to see how to catch Jesus in his discourses. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, to tell him: «Master, we know that you are truthful and teach the way of God according to truth. You are not in awe of anyone, because you do not look anyone in the face. So, tell us your opinion: is it lawful, or not, to pay the tax to Caesar? ». But Jesus, knowing their malice, replied: «You hypocrites, why do you want to test me? Show me the coin of the tax ». And they presented him with a denarius. He asked them, "Whose image and inscription are they?" They answered him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Pay back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
The Christian is called to commit himself concretely in human and social realities without opposing "God" and "Caesar"; opposing God and Caesar would be a fundamentalist attitude. The Christian is called to commit himself concretely to earthly realities, but illuminating them with the light that comes from God. The priority entrustment to God and hope in him does not involve an escape from reality, but rather an industrious rendering to God what belongs to him. . (Angelus 22 October 2017)
