Today's Gospel 20 September 2020 with the words of Pope Francis

READING OF THE DAY
First reading

From the book of the prophet Isaiah
Is 55,6-9

Seek the Lord while he is found, invoke him while he is near.
Let the wicked abandon his way and the unjust man his thoughts;
return to the Lord who will have mercy on him and to our God who generously forgives.
Because my thoughts are not your thoughts,
your ways are not my ways. Oracle of the Lord.
How much the sky hangs over the earth,
so my ways dominate your ways,
my thoughts overwhelm your thoughts.

Second reading

From the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians
Phil 1,20c-24.27a

Brothers, Christ will be glorified in my body, whether I live or I die.

For me, in fact, living is Christ and dying is gain.
But if living in the body means working fruitfully, I don't really know what to choose. In fact, I am caught between these two things: I have the desire to leave this life to be with Christ, which would be much better; but for you it is more necessary that I remain in the body.
Therefore behave in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Matthew
Mt 20,1-16

At that time, Jesus said this parable to his disciples:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a landlord who went out at dawn to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed with them for one denarius a day and sent them to his vineyard. Then when he went out about nine in the morning, he saw others standing in the square, unemployed, and he said to them: “You also go into the vineyard; I will give you what is right ”. And they went.
He went out again about noon and about three, and did the same.
When he went out again around five o'clock, he saw others standing there and said to them: "Why are you standing here all day doing nothing?". They replied: "Because no one has taken us by the day." And he said to them, "You also go into the vineyard."
When it was evening, the owner of the vineyard said to his farmer: "Call the workers and give them their pay, starting with the last ones up to the first ones".
The five o'clock in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. When the first came, they thought they would get more. But they too received a denarius each. On withdrawing it, however, they murmured against the master saying: "The latter worked only an hour and you treated them like us, who have borne the burden of the day and the heat". : “Dude, I'm not doing you wrong. Didn't you agree with me for a denarius? Take yours and go. But I also want to give the latter as to you: can't I do what I want with my things? Or are you envious because I am good? ".
Thus the last will be first and the first, last ».

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
This "injustice" of the boss serves to provoke, in those who listen to the parable, a leap in level, because here Jesus does not want to talk about the problem of work or just wages, but about the Kingdom of God! And the message is this: in the Kingdom of God there are no unemployed, everyone is called to do their part; and for all in the end there will be the reward that comes from divine justice - not human, luckily for us! -, that is, the salvation that Jesus Christ acquired for us with his death and resurrection. A salvation that is not deserved, but given - salvation is free. He uses mercy, he forgives widely. (Angelus, September 24, 2017
