Today's Gospel March 23 2020 with comment

From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John 4,43: 54-XNUMX.
At that time, Jesus left Samaria for going to Galilee.
But he himself had declared that a prophet does not receive honor in his homeland.
But when he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him with joy, since they had seen everything he had done in Jerusalem during the festival; they too had gone to the party.
So he went again to Cana of Galilee, where he had changed the water into wine. There was an official of the king, who had a sick son in Capernaum.
When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to go down to heal his son because he was about to die.
Jesus said to him, "If you don't see signs and wonders, you don't believe."
But the king's official insisted, "Lord, come down before my baby dies."
Jesus replies: «Go, your son lives». The man believed the word that Jesus had said to him and set off.
Just as he was going down, the servants came to him and said, "Your son lives!"
He then inquired at what time he had begun to feel better. They said to him, "Yesterday, an hour after noon the fever left him."
The father recognized that just at that hour Jesus had said to him: "Your son lives" and he believed with all his family.
This was the second miracle that Jesus did by returning from Judea to Galilee.

Imitation of Christ
spiritual treatise of the fifteenth century

IV, 18
"If you don't see signs and wonders, you don't believe"
"He who claims to know the majesty of God will be crushed by his greatness" (Pr 25,27 Vulg.). God can do greater things than man can understand (...); faith and frankness of life are required of you, not universal knowledge. You, who cannot know and understand what is below you, how could you understand what is above you? Submit to God, submit reason to faith, and you will be given the necessary light.

Some suffer strong temptations about faith and the holy sacrament; may be a suggestion from the enemy. Do not dwell on the doubts that the devil inspires you, do not argue with the thoughts he suggests to you. Instead, believe the word of God; entrust yourself to the saints and the prophets, and the infamous enemy will flee from you. That the servant of God endures such things is often very helpful. The devil does not submit to temptations those who have no faith, nor sinners, who already surely has in his hand; instead, he tries to torment believers and devotees in various ways.

Proceed therefore with frank and firm faith; approach Him with humble veneration. Peacefully forgive God, who can do everything, what you cannot understand: God does not deceive you; while the one who trusts too much in himself is deceived. God walks beside the simple, reveals himself to the humble, "Your word in revealing illuminates, gives wisdom to the simple" (Ps 119,130), opens the mind to the pure in heart; and withdraw grace from the curious and the proud. Human reason is weak and can be wrong, while true faith cannot be deceived. All reasoning, all our research must go after faith; do not precede it or fight it.
