Today's Gospel November 23, 2020 with the words of Pope Francis

READING OF THE DAY
From the book of the Apocalypse of Saint John the Apostle
Ap 14,1-3.4b-5

I, John, saw: here is the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand people, who bore his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads.

And I heard a voice coming from heaven, like the roar of great waters and like the rumble of loud thunder. The voice I heard was like that of zither players accompanying themselves in song with their lyres. They sing like a new song before the throne and before the four living beings and the elders. And no one could understand that song but the one hundred and forty-four thousand, the redeemed of the earth.
They are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever he goes. These were redeemed among men as the first fruits for God and for the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouth: they are spotless.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Luke
Lc 21,1-4

At that time, Jesus looked up and saw the rich throwing their offerings into the treasury of the temple.
He also saw a poor widow, who threw two small coins into it, and said: «Truly I tell you: this widow, so poor, has thrown more than anyone. All of them, in fact, have thrown away part of their superfluous as an offering. On the other hand, in her misery, she threw away everything she had to live ».

WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
Jesus observes that woman attentively and draws the attention of the disciples to the stark contrast of the scene. The rich gave, with great ostentation, what was superfluous for them, while the widow, with discretion and humility, gave "all she had to live" (v. 44); for this - says Jesus - she gave more than all. To love God "with all your heart" means to trust in him, in his providence, and to serve him in the poorest brothers without expecting anything in return. Faced with the needs of our neighbor, we are called to deprive ourselves of something indispensable, not just the superfluous; we are called to give some of our talents immediately and without reserve, not after having used it for our personal or group purposes.
