GOSPEL
They tried to catch him, but he got out of their hands.
+ From the Gospel according to John 10,31: 42-XNUMX
At that time, the Jews collected stones to stone Jesus. Jesus said to them: "I have shown you many good works by the Father: for which of them do you want to stone me?". The Jews answered him, "We do not stone you for a good work, but for a blasphemy: because you, who are men, make yourself God." Jesus said to them, "Is it not written in your Law:" I said: you are gods "? Now, if it called gods those to whom the word of God was addressed - and Scripture cannot be canceled - to the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world you say: "You blaspheme", because I said: " Am I the Son of God ”? If I don't do the works of my Father, don't believe me; but if I do them, even if you don't believe me, you believe in works, because you know and know that the Father is in me, and I in the Father ». Then they tried to catch him again, but he got out of their hands. Then he returned again beyond the Jordan, to the place where John previously baptized, and here he remained. Many went to him and said, "John did not do anything, but everything John said about him was true." And in that place many believed in him.

HOMILY
It would have been really easy for Jesus to turn against his accusers, and with greater reason, the accusation that they recklessly address to him: "You make yourself God". It is precisely in this that the essence and the root of their and our sin since the one committed in the beginning by our forefathers. "You will be like gods", the evil one had insinuated to them, in that first temptation and so it continues to repeat every time it wants to induce us to unbridled freedom to put us against God and then let us experience fear and nudity. The Jews, on the other hand, bring this accusation against the only-begotten Son of the Father. For this reason, in their opinion, he must be stoned because his words sound like a horrible blasphemy in their ears. They derive cause for scandal and condemnation. Yet many, remembering the testimony of John the Baptist and seeing with a simple heart the works that he was doing, listening with docility to his teachings, gave in to him. The hardest of hearts have always been those who feel particularly disturbed by the truth, who consider themselves unassailable and custodians of the good, who instead feel touched and wounded in pride. Jesus reminds them: «Is it not written in your Law: I said: are you gods? Now, if it h "Is it not written in your Law:" I said: you are gods "? Now, if it has called gods those to whom the word of God was addressed and the Scripture cannot be canceled, to the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world you say: "You blaspheme", because I said: "I am Son of God"?". Jesus concludes his tight argument: "if you don't want to believe me, at least believe in the works, so that you know and know that the Father is in me and I in the Father". What Jesus says is a moment and a conclusive argument: He is true God in the hypostatic union with the Father. He therefore invokes faith because only in this way can he be understood, he asks to see his works with that light, divine gift, to stop the judgment and give birth to the loving welcome. We too are witnesses and recipients of the works of Christ, we offer him our most intense gratitude. (Silvestrini Fathers)
