Gospel, Saint, prayers today October 17th

Today's Gospel
From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 11,37-41.
At that time, after Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to lunch. He came in and sat down to the table.
The Pharisee marveled that he had not made the ablutions before lunch.
Then the Lord said to him, "You Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and plate, but your inside is full of robbery and iniquity.
You fools! Did not he who made the exterior do the interior?
Rather give in alms what's inside, and behold, everything will be world for you. "

Saint of today - Blessed Contardo Ferrini
Contardo Ferrini (Milan, April 4, 1859 - Verbania, October 17, 1902) was an Italian academic and jurist, venerated as blessed by the Catholic Church.
He became one of the most esteemed scholars of Roman law of his time, whose activity also left an imprint on his subsequent studies. He was a professor in various universities, but his name is linked above all to the University of Pavia, where he graduated in 1880. The Almo Collegio Borromeo, of which he was a pupil and then lecturer from 1894 to his death, still retains his illustrious memory

He attended two years of specialization in Berlin, then returned to Italy, taught Roman law at the University of Messina and had Vittorio Emanuele Orlando as a colleague. He was dean of the legal faculty of Modena.

At a time when university professors were mostly anticlerical, Contardo Ferrini was linked to the Catholic Church, expressing a heartfelt inner religiosity and an open manifestation of thought and charitable works, marking a turning point towards a Christianity attentive to the needs of the humble. He was a brother of the San Vincenzo Conference and was also elected municipal councilor in Milan from 1895 to 1898.

The Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Father Agostino Gemelli considered Contardo Ferrini a precursor of his and a teacher to be inspired by. Under this pressure, in times reluctant to canonization, in 1947 he was proclaimed blessed by Pope Pius XII.

He was buried in Suna, then his body was moved to the Chapel of the Catholic University of Milan: his heart was brought back to Suna after his beatification.

Among his fundamental works, the studies on the Greek Paraphrase of the Institutions of Theophilus.

The “Contardo Ferrini” state elementary school in Rome, located in Via di Villa Chigi, was dedicated to him.
