Today it is easy to forget that all biblical characters they have different names than they have in our language. Be Jesus e María Rosal (Fernán‐Núñez, Córdoba, 1961) is a complete writer. Her poetic work has been translated into English, Italian and Greek.

This is her second book for children in edebé, after the funniest title, El secreto de las patatas fritas.

Maria has a very funny sense of humour.in fact, they have names that in Hebrew and Aramaic with a deep spiritual meaning.

As for the name of the Virgin Mary, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “the Hebrew form of her name is miryam o myriam". This name was used in the Old Testament to indicate theonly sister of Moses.

However, over the years the name has been translated several times as the Bible has spread to all parts of the world.

In New Testament the name of the Virgin Mary is always Mariam. Maybe the Evangelists have kept the archaic form of the name of the Blessed Virgin, in order to distinguish her from other women who bore the same name. The Vulgate mentions the name of Mary, both in the Old Testament and in the New; Josephus (Ant. Jud., II, ix, 4) changes the name to Mariamme.

The name "Miriam", however, is closer to the Hebrew original than the Latin and Italian "Maria".

Furthermore, the original definition of the name has great symbolic value. Indeed, some Bible scholars have seen Hebrew words there Mar (bitter) e yam (sea). This first meaning can refer to the bitter suffering of Mary for the sacrifice of her Son and for the pain suffered.

Another interpretation of the word mar is "drop of the sea" e San Girolamo he translated it into Latin as “stilla maris”, which was later changed to stella (stella) maris. This explains a popular title for Maria, i.e. Star of the Sea.

St. Bonaventure he took many of these meanings and combined their symbolism, giving each its own spiritual meaning: “This most holy, sweet and worthy name was eminently suited to a virgin so holy, sweet and worthy. Maria means bitter sea, star of the sea, the enlightened or illuminator. Maria is also a Lady. Therefore, Mary is a bitter sea for the demons; for men it is the Star of the sea; for the Angels she is Illuminator and for all creatures she is Lady ”.
