The wonder of faith, today's meditation

The astonishment of the faith “Most assuredly, I tell you, the Son cannot do anything by himself, but only what he sees the Father doing; for what he does, the Son will do it too. Because the Father loves the Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him works greater than these, so that you can be amazed “. John 5: 25–26

The more mystery Central and more glorious than our faith is that of the Most Holy Trinity. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one God and yet three distinct Persons. As divine "Persons", each is distinct; but as one God, each Person acts in perfect union with the others. In today's gospel, Jesus clearly identifies Heavenly Father as His Father and clearly states that He and His Father are one. For this reason, there were those who wanted to kill Jesus because "he called God his father, making himself equal to God".

The sad reality is that the greatest and most glorious truth of the inner life of God, the mystery of the Holy Trinity, was one of the main reasons why some chose to hate Jesus and sought his life. Clearly, it was their ignorance of this glorious truth that drove them to this hatred.

We call the Holy Trinity a "mystery", not because they cannot be known, but because our knowledge of Who I am can never be fully understood. For eternity, we will go deeper and deeper into our knowledge of Trinity and we will be "amazed" on an ever deeper level.

the wonder of faith, the meditation of the day

A further aspect of the mystery of Trinity is that each of us is called to participate in his own life. We will forever remain distinct from God; but, as many of the early Fathers of the Church liked to say, we must become "deified" in the sense that we must participate in the divine life of God through our union of body and soul with Christ Jesus. That union also unites us to the Father and to the Spirit. This truth should also leave us "stunned", as we read in the passage above.

While this week we continue reading the Gospel of John and continue to meditate on Jesus' mysterious and profound teaching about His relationship with the Father in Heaven, it is essential that we do not just overlook the mysterious language that Jesus uses. Rather, we must enter into prayer into the mystery and let our penetration into this mystery leave us truly amazed. Amazement and transforming edification are the only good answer. We will never fully understand the Trinity, but we must allow the truth of our Triune God to take hold of us and enrich us, at least, in a way that knows how much we don't know - and that knowledge leaves us in awe.

Reflect today on the sacred mystery of the Holy Trinity. Pray that God will reveal himself more fully to your mind and more completely consume your will. Pray to be able to share deeply the life of the Trinity in order to be filled with holy awe and awe.

the wonder of faith: God most holy and triune, the love you share in your very being as Father, Son and Holy Spirit is beyond my understanding. The mystery of your triune life is a mystery of the highest degree. Draw me, dear Lord, into the life you share with your Father and the Holy Spirit. Fill me with wonder and awe as you invite me to share your divine life. Holy Trinity, I trust in You.
