Blessed Matilde was born in 1240 third daughter of a noble baron. At a very young age, after seeing her older sister become nun and then abbess in the monastery, she dedicated herself to monastic life. She just had 8 years the little girl who, growing up, became the inspirational figure of Dante Alighieri and the spiritual guide of Saint Gertrude the Great.

In the monastery, his immediately stood out intellectual and musical gifts which made her an excellent scholar and a gifted singer, so much so that she was nicknamed the nightingale of God. She was the director of the monastery choir and wrote some letters to a noble matron. However, the Book of Grace, which collects the notes of the mystical visions he received, was compiled and made public by his disciple Saint Gertrude after his death.

The revelations of Jesus and Mary to Matilde Hackerbon

She didn't want her revelations to be transcribed, but Jesus told her that they would serve to give glory to God and would be for the good of others. In those revelations the Virgin Mary he promised assistance at the hour of death with his presence if they were recited every day three Ave Maria in honor of three Persons of the Trinity, giving thanks for the gifts of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This form of prayer was propagated and supported by several pontiffs.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart developed in the following centuries thanks to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, but the influence of Saint Matilda's faith and mystical thought is evident here too. She invited us to praise Jesus with the Heart of the Mother and to praise Mary with the Heart of the Son. Matilde died at the age of 58 years old, on November 19, 1258, after eight years of illnesses.
