The history of the sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona

The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Corona has one ancient history which dates back to the 15th century, when it was built as hermitage. The first church was built in 1530 to celebrate the appearance of the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, a painted stone effigy depicting the Madonna holding the dead Christ in his arms. According to legend, during the siege of Rhodes by the Turks this effigy miraculously appeared in this place.

In 1625, thanks to the interest of the Knights of Malta, the church was elevated to Sanctuary rank and a new building was constructed. Over the centuries, the Sanctuary has been expanded and enriched with a Gothic façade and marble statues, taking on the appearance it has today.

A ladder, similar to the Holy Stairs of the basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome, evokes the journey that Jesus took during the Passion. Climbing this ladder means kneeling on each of the twenty-eight steps, pausing and praying at every stage of the Passion.

In addition to the Pietà of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Sanctuary boasts a collection of votive offered by the faithful who have received thank you from Our Lady over the centuries. There is also a notable wooden nativity scene and the Tomb of the Hermits, which houses the bodies of the ancient inhabitants of the hermitage.
